What are the main differences between the three types of flooring?
- Laminate is a popular budget-friendly and hard-wearing alternative to wood flooring. It consists of a core layer of rigid fibreboard, manufactured from wood byproducts, and a hard plastic laminate surface layer printed with a design (usually to look like wood or stone). Laminate is suited to virtually all areas of the home and office. Because laminate has a plastic surface layer, it can withstand liquid spills that are cleaned up quickly. However, laminate is still made from wood, so any standing water that is allowed to seep between the seams will damage the fibreboard core.
- Rigidcore vinyl is similar to laminate with the exception that it is 100% synthetic, which makes it ideally suited to use in kitchens, bathrooms or any other areas where excessive or standing water might be present. Vinyl boards are also thinner than laminate.
- Wood flooring is made from solid wood. That is, each plank is milled from a single piece of timber. Wood floors are beautiful and are incredibly durable, but are the most costly of the three types.
